1940's Radio Hour

1940's Radio Hour is a musical play by Walton Jones. It was performed at the St. James Theatre on Broadway from 7th October 1979 to 6th January 1980.

The musical had 14 previews and 105 performances in this first season. It has 21 musical numbers composed by various musicians and lyrics by different songwriters.

I Got a Gal From Kalamazoo by Clifton, Pepsi Cola, How About You, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by Neal, B.J., Connie, & Ginger, Daddy by Connie, The Band, Merry Little Christmas by, and Love Is Here To Stay by Johnny are some numbers that feature in this musical.

1940's Radio Hour, true to its title, presents the music from the 1940s with old-time sound effects and great scope for dancing.

The musical play has the final broadcast of the Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade on the New York radio station WOV (Dec 1942).

Plot and Characters

The show was broadcasted for American soldiers who were serving overseas during WWII. It was set in the New York radio station WOV, where it was time to record the broadcast for the troops.

The narrative was by a harassed producer trying his best to deal with the drunken lead singer. Then, there was a delivery boy looking for a chance to sing.

There was also a second banana dreaming about singing a ballad and a sound-effects man who played the trumpet. He chose a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

It was difficult for the producer to finish the show without hiccups with so much going on. This quirky plot, paired with great music from big bands during the time, presented non-stop entertainment to the audience. 1940's Radio Hour is a single set two-act musical comedy.

There are thirteen characters in the musical, each playing a different role. Clifton Feddington is the head of all things important at WOV, the general manager, and the announcer. He is sometimes hysterical.

Ann Collier has been with the radio since its inception, and sings like Doris Day, Dinah Shore, and Peggy Lee all rolled into one. She is also a secretary by the day and is dating Johnny.

Johnny is the lead singer, the one who is almost always drunk, and an ex-boxer. Of course, his velvet-like voice is his USP.

Neal Tilden is the cab driver, and Biff Baker is the trumpet player. Browse through our website for further information about musicals, plays, and shows.
