A Bronx Tale
In the postmortem age, we have come across the term ad nauseum, where everyone is supposed to get about 15 minutes of fame. Therefore, it might appear that everyone has the right to direct their Italian-American movies.
Robert De Niro is the latest at laying the claim to the second right as he had made out like the bandit on the quarter-hour thing.
The Plot
The foundation of A Bronx Tales lies in the play of Chazz Palminteri. It's about the coming of age of Calogero, played by Francis Capra and then by Lillo Brancato, a kid who grew up in the Bronx, an Italian neighborhood.
Since witnessing the murder at the age of 9, he smartly keeps quiet about the assailant's identity while he finds himself being adopted by the killer who had his benevolent hood known as Sonny.
In the meanwhile, the bus driver father of Calogero is Lorenzo. The latter tries to keep the kid on the lowest budget straight and narrow.
C starts growing up between the dueling mentors who bounce in and out of trouble.
Palminteri resurrected the play on Broadway in 2007 and A Bronx Tale, where the musical started with performances on Broadway.
Palminteri had written the book while De-Niro co-directed along with Jerry Jaks. The musical closed on 2018 August 5th after 700 regular performances.
The Fame
Hollywood Studios went crazy after noticing it while offering them millions of dollars for turning them into a massive movie.
There is a catch involved where they wanted to place the stars into the role of Sonny while someone else starts writing down the screenplay.
Palminteri said No with 200 dollars in the bank as he would hold out and start waiting. He wanted to play Sonny and pen down the screenplay.
The single-night Palminteri had entered his dressing room, and there was Robert De Niro, who saw the show.
Palminteri had written the screenplay for the film A Bronx Tale, while he later wrote the book for the Broadway Musical. It turned out as a hit on Broadway and was voted the Best Show of the Year in Las Vegas.
It was this initial time in history when the same actor had written the one-person play, the movie, and the Broadway Musical while staring across everyone.
Palminteri had starred in over 60 movies being produced and directed films nominated for the Academy Awards for Bullets over Broadway. You will see the exact show Chazz Palminteri did about 34 years earlier, making him the star.
