Ain't Misbehavin'

Ain't Misbehavin' is a musical revue with music and lyrics by various people but arranged and orchestrated by Luther Henderson and a book by Murray Horwitz.

The musical is named after a song by Fats Waller (Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller). It was first presented as a tribute to him at the Manhattan Theater Club's East 73rd Street cabaret in 1978.

The musical opened at the Longacre Theater on Broadway three months later. It was transferred to the Plymouth Theater and the Belasco Theater and continued until 1982.

The musical had a total of 1604 performances and fourteen previews on Broadway.

The West End production in London began in 1979. The Broadway revival occurred in 1988 with the same cast. However, the musical ran only for 176 performances. It was revived in 1995 with a different cast.

Ain’t Misbehavin’ is a revue with almost no dialogue. A revue is a multi-act show which combines music, dance, and sketches. The original Broadway version was nominated for many awards. It won three Drama Desk Awards in 1978, two Theater World Awards, and three Tony Awards in the same year.

Synopsis and Musical Numbers

Ain’t Misbehavin’ presents the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s through the journey of five performers. The musical is lively, sassy, and sultry and presents an alluring combination of pleasure and play through some greatest hits by Fats Waller.

The musical is divided into two acts, with 15 musical numbers in the first act and 16 in the second act. It starts with Ain't Misbehavin' and ends with the Honeysuckle band.

Numbers like I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling, Honeysuckle Rose, This Joint is Jumpin', and Black & Blue are included in the musical.

The entire musical lasts less than two hours and has one intermission between the two acts. It has a cast of five and a band with seven people. The musical numbers are divided into solos, duets, and group songs so that every member shows off their expertise individually and in the group.

The original cast had Irene Cara, André DeShields, Nell Carter, Ken Page, and Armelia McQueen, staged by Arthur Faria.

Charlayne Woodard replaced Irene Cara and debuted on Broadway. She was recognized for Outstanding Actress in a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical at the Tony Awards.
