& Juliet - Musical
& Juliet is a 2019 coming-of-age musical that presents an alternate ending to the original (Romeo and Juliet) by asking a simple question- what if Julie doesn’t die? Swedish pop songwriter, Karl Martin Sandberg (Max Martin), has composed the music.
The musical premiered in Manchester. It was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards in 2020 and won three. It was also nominated for thirteen awards at the 2020 WhatsOnStage Awards and won six of them.
Miriam-Teak Lee, who played Juliet in the show, won both awards as Best Actress in a Musical. Lorna Courtney played Juliet on Broadway and in Toronto.
& Juliet and the Modern Twist
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is considered among the greatest love stories and tragedies ever written. But what if things happened differently? After all, times have changed. Maybe Juliet changed too.
& Juliet was developed using this premise to convert the tragic romance into a coming-of-age story of Juliet, who makes a different decision, thus altering the course and creating a new path for her future.
The musical is divided into two acts and has a dozen pop anthems famous among the fans. Baby One More Time, Since U Been Gone, Roar, It’s My Life, I Want It That Way, and Can’t Stop the Feeling! are included in the musical. Max Martin wrote One More Try exclusively for the show.
The musical starts with Shakespeare introducing his wife, Anne Hathaway, to the audience and explaining the story of Romeo and Juliet to her.
Anne suggests that he change the ending by asking what would happen if Juliet didn't kill herself. She goes on to explain her idea for the plot, where Juliet wakes up to see Romeo dead.
The musical moves on in a new direction as Juliet uncovers Romeo's past relationships and goes to France with her friends.
There starts an all-new drama with Shakespeare and Anne discussing and fighting over the plot twists they throw into the story. Romeo even makes a comeback from the dead, and Juliet has some serious life decisions to make.
Yet, the musical is hilarious, lighthearted, and entertaining- the opposite of the original. & Juliet is inclusive and presents a modern take on growing up, relationships, love, etc.
The show has become a hit with a global audience and is being staged in different parts of the world.
