Bliss Point
Bliss Point is a popular show by Kansas City Ballet. It is a collection of three ballet performances- Sandpaper, Petite Mort, and Cacti. Different professionals have choreographed each performance.
The Bliss Point shows are renowned for their artistic appeal and mesmerizing performances by leading ballet dancers. The shows are performed for a limited time every year. You can find more details about Bliss Point Shows on our website.
Sandpaper Ballet
Mark Morris is the choreographer of Sandpaper ballet. He created it in 1999 for San Francisco Ballet.
The show has sixteen women and nine men dancing classical ballet on the stage. The choice of odd-numbered dancers is deliberate. Leroy Anderson was the music director, and Isaac Mizrahi did the costumes.
The ballet was revived in 2020, and a full recording was released online in 2021 (due to Covid restrictions). The dance formations and patterns are a highlight of Sandpaper ballet.
Tina Fehlandt, who collaborates with Morris, says that he has a different style of presenting classical ballet where every dancer has an individual present during the performance and not just the principal dancer of the show.
Petite Mort Ballet
Jiří Kylián is the choreographer of Petite Mort ballet. He first created it for Nederlands Dans Theater in 1991.
He was an artistic director of the theatre (1976 to 1999) and created this ballet for the Salzburg Festival, held on the second centenary of Mozart's death. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave music for the performance.
The word Petite Mort means ‘small death’ in French and is a way to describe ecstasy/ orgasm. Jiří Kylián says that he based the choreography for the ballet on the two slow movements from the most famous piano concerts by Mozart.
He removed the faster movements to bring out the combination of sex and death simultaneously.
Cacti Ballet
Alexander Ekman choreographed Cacti ballet with sixteen dancers. The ballet is considered a parody of ‘excess’ in art forms. It has music by Franz Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert.
The ballet requires immense concentration, which makes it a wonderful performance for the audience.
Ekman says that he created Cacti when he was in a confused phase in his life, and the dance is a reflection of it. He says it can be interpreted by the audience in their own ways.
