Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco
A popular tourist destination in the United States, San Francisco is known for many things – the Gold Gate Bridge, cable cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, wineries, Silicon Valley, the 49ers, the Giants, artisan foods, and the Bay. With such eclectic appeals, the area has aggregated artists, immigrants, and innocators. San Francisco’s art scene is at the top of the attraction list, boasting one-of-a-kind art shows, community-based productions, and mainsteam performances alike. One of the most longstanding venues to visit for performing arts is Orpheum Theatre.
Orpheum Theatre is a treasured spot in the Bay Area, known for bringing world-class performing arts to San Francisco. Currently owned by SHN – the theater production company headed by Carole Shorenstein Hays and Robert Nederlander – it promises expert performances. Being a Tony Award-winning produce, Shorenstein’s stamp of approval ensures audiences experience the best of the best. Orpheum hosts popular musicals and plays that are surefire crowd pleasers, but it also takes on world premieres, exclusive regional runs, national tours, and Broadway previews. It is the West Coast’s insider look at the best of performance.
Orpheum Theatre Schedule Over the Years
Today, the Theatre is known for committing to one major Broadway production at a time, giving those who live in or travel to the Bay Area time to experience the perfected artistry of a given production. Recent and upcoming features include Hamilton, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, The Color Purple, The Book of Mormon, and Aladdin. Hamilton Broadway tickets are especially popular. Over the years, the Orpheum Theatre schedule included a wide-ranging collection of performers, such as Grateful Dead, Harry Connick Jr., James Taylor, Tom Waits, David Byrne, St. Vincent, Diana Ross, and Tina Fey. Visitors can be assured that if it is on stage, it will be good.
Broadway Shows Included in Orpheum Theatre Schedule
Orpheum Theatre originally opened in 1926. It was first named after circuit-owner Alexander Pantages, who employed architect Benjamin Marcus Priteca to design the place. Pantages wanted to showcase impressive vaudeville acts of the time. Renovated multiple times, including in ‘53 and in ‘98, Orpheum Theatre schedule has been altered to better accommodate Broadway shows, which tend to fill its stage in modern times. The original design featured some elements that remain today: a beautifully vaulted ceiling and Spanish-Gothic style design elements. Intricate and ornamental, it is considered the most fascinating of Pantage’s theatres. Although it has long since switched owners, it is one of three major Market Street theatres to have survived the test of time.
