History Behind Carolina Ballet
Carolina Ballet was first named Raleigh Dance Theater, Inc. in 1984. Ann Vorus started the dance theater to provide opportunities for ballet students. It went on to grow over the next few years and was renamed Carolina Ballet Theater.
Ann Vorus was the artistic director during the period. Mary LeGere was her successor, and the two of them worked hard to convert the theater into a pre-professional regional company.
It first came as a suggestion in 1993 from Ward Purrington, Raleigh’s lawyer. He saw the need to get a professional status for the dance theater.
Raleigh Dance Theater was a success in the region, loved by ballet lovers and critics alike. There was also a need for an establishment to promote ballet and create more opportunities for talented dancers from the region (South Carolina).
Finally, in 1997, Robert Weiss was made the artistic director of Carolina Ballet Inc. He was a principal dancer at the famous New York City Ballet and worked as the artistic director at the Pennsylvania Ballet.
The School of Carolina Ballet
Combining traditional and contemporary ballet is the trademark of Carolina Ballet Company. The School of Carolina Ballet trains kids and adults (beginners to pre-professionals) to become proficient in ballet.
Zalman Raffael became the artistic director of the company in 2019. Michele Weathers is the executive director of Carolina Ballet. The syllabus is curated by experienced ballet professionals from all the leading ballet companies in the US.
Ann Brodie's Carolina Ballet
Another ballet company shares its name with Carolina Ballet. Ann Brodie’s Carolina Ballet Center for Dance Education is a pre-professional ballet company founded by Calvert Brodie.
The dancers from this company have been global performers for years. The dance company is emphatic that all dancers should have the same level of opportunities, irrespective of whether they wish to continue as professional dancers or not.
The Center for Dance Education bases its ballet syllabus on the Russian manual set by Agrippina Vaganova and blends it with the neoclassical styles from American ballet.
