NASCAR

Auto racing has been around since the invention of motor vehicles. One of the reigning forces in American racing is NASCAR—the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Since its inception in 1949, NASCAR has overseen various types of races across the country. The organization is most known for the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series, and Camping World Truck Series.

Over the years, NASCAR schedule has changed drastically. Today, the racing season lasts from February to November, with 38 races occurring across the 10 months. However, in the past, NASCAR had a different schedule, packing an incredible November to November season with 62 races in 1964. That’s nearly double the races and a full-year schedule. Another difference is the terrain on which racers drive. Today, privately-owned tracks feature asphalt and concrete, but the races of yesterday featured dirt, asphalt, and sand. And, overall, the sport has gotten much more high profile, with racers being celebrities in their own right; long gone are the days of sleeping in sketchy motels across the country. Even dollar winnings have increased drastically.

Something that is different about auto racing even today is that the “matches” are not typical when compared to other sports. For example, the NASCAR Spring Cup Series takes place on 22 tracks on which 36 races take place a season, plus 2 exhibition races. Of these tracks, some are road courses, some are super speedways, and some are traditional oval-shaped tracks. One might think of these matches as rounds, narrowing out weaker players, but the game is still a much more extended experience, and the diversity of terrains adds a unique nuance to the sport.

Fans of auto racing and devotees of NASCAR say that there is nothing like experiencing a race in person. Imagine the bright colors of cars. Imagine the iconic logos everywhere, from uniforms to cars to banners: Monster, the energy drink; Lowe’s, the home improvement store; Budweiser, the beer crafters. Imagine the smells of gasoline and burning rubber. Imagine the taste of cold beers. Imagine the sounds of revving engines and screaming crows. NASCAR tracks are scattered across much of the Northeast and Southeast, but a handful of tracks can be found in the American Southwest, too. If you live near any of these destinations, take the leap, and enjoy the NASCAR experience. Or, check the upcoming NASCAR schedule and tickets and make a trip for the game and enjoy any of the popular areas where tracks can be found, from Kansas City, Kansas to Fort Worth, Texas.
