Dear Jack, Dear Louise
Ken Ludwig, the director, portrays the poignant stories of his own parents through the play Dear Jack, Dear Louise. The long-distance couple has lengthy conversations that are put into writing during World War II before they ever meet in person.
The warm, gently comedic World War II set epistolary rom-com of Ken Ludwig is the soft focus balm that will get your rooter for both the Army medic and the showgirl aspiring to gain a title.
The Plot
The plot of Dear Jack, Dear Louise is a sweeter one, less ridiculous than the triple Tony-winning Lend Me a Tenor of Ludwig; however, it retains the sunnier optimism of the playwright throughout. It is a comedy and not a tragedy; therefore, it is not a spoiler to mention that there is not much of a doubt that Louise and Jack eventually overcome their obstacles.
The production of Northlight has a cast that gets sparked with the live-wire chemistry echoing the movie stars who are getting referenced by this script, with Jack having the quiet everyman dignity of being a nice guy. In contrast, Jimmy Stewart with Louise has the spitfire or deadpan with the effects of Katharine Hepburn. Their banter has an engaging rhythm with no smaller tasks, which are given to characters who are reading the letters instead of interacting in person.
Both met at least on paper after their parents acted as the long-distance matchmakers. Jack even pragmatically starts explaining in their charmingly matter-of-fact introductory letter to Louise that their fathers know one another and agree that Jack should get urged to write to Louise so the two might meet and socially get acquainted. Jack even continues that he is in the army and asks Louis if she would get interested in exchanging the letters.
They even start slowly while each of them is prodding enough to determine whether the other is worth pursuing further. It might appear to Jack that there is almost nothing interesting to get relayed about life. The exasperated Louise gets taken aback when he finally mentions whatever is done in the army while he is the doctor. It is a complete vocation that should take him from Medford to the undisclosed locations across the Western Front, where there are endless cycles for the carnage to take a greater toll.
