Divergence

Divergence is a popular ballet performance by the Houston Ballet Company. It's a 40-minute classical ballet show with 16 dancers performing to amazing music.

Houston Ballet calls Divergence an audience-favorite and a showstopper.

As the name suggests, the ballet diverges from the classical tones and gives it an edge without losing the essence of classical ballet.

People who love ballet have to watch Divergence at least once in their lifetime. Check out our site for additional information.

More About Divergence

Stanton Welch AM choreographed Divergence with music support by Georges Bizet. The ballet is a vibrant collection of mini-dramas that merge to create a mesmerizing performance for the audience.

The costumes are inspired by the mid-1990s but with a touch of absurdity and drama. This, however, creates an enthralling visual on the stage as the dancers move, twist, twirl, or stand rock-still per the plot.

The costumes change during the performance, as female dancers add or remove skirts, pants, tutus, etc., without altering the basic black unitards they wear. The men also wear unitards, though they don't modify the costume.

The finale is the highlight of Divergence, where female dancers take the stage with grace and energy. There's a sense of recklessness in the dance moves that delight viewers and ends the performance with a high.

Another strong point of Divergence is how the choreography sometimes syncs with the music and goes against it at other times. French court dances and folksongs inspire the music. This also establishes the theme of 'divergence.'

Houston Ballet Company

Houston Ballet is a regional ballet company from Houston, Texas. It was founded in 1955 as Houston Foundation for Ballet.

Tatiana Semenova, a Russian-born ballet dancer with the famous Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Company, started the new foundation to train young dancers.

The focus of the foundation was to provide training opportunities to under-served students in the region. Nina Popova, another student and a ballet dancer for Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, was made the foundation's artistic director in 1967.

Their first performance was in December of the same year. Nina Popova's team performed Giselle with star dancers from the American Ballet Theatre.

Ben Stevenson became the artistic director in 1976 because of his solid foundation in classical ballet. The company performed many classical works during his tenure. Go through the details on our website to learn more about the ballet performances in your region.
