Felipe Esparza

Felipe Esparza is a stand-up comedian and actor. Being a Mexican immigrant is not easy anywhere, and even more so for Esparza, who grew up in East Los Angeles in the poor neighborhood of Boyle Heights, surrounded by gangs and substance abuse.

At the age of 21, while Esparza was going through rehab, he was asked about the five goals he has in life. Never knowing what life would be like after 18 and having a bleak future ahead of him, he didn't know much he wanted to list out.

Despite that, the two things he did put on his list were ‘to be happy’ and ‘to be a stand‐up comedian' because of his connection with the famous comedian Bill Cosby.

Little did he know that this little wish would come true in the future.

Career and Accomplishments

When he first began his career as a stand-up comedian, he started off by being an opening act for shows for names such as Paul Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias. Soon after, he decided to try his luck by being on his own.

Although this endeavor led to very few opportunities and less income in the beginning, he never lost hope. Esparza then became a part of Que Locos, which was a stand-up comedy show on Galavisión.

The show was responsible for getting his career on track, along with a few other comedians, such as Willie Barcena, Gabriel Iglesias, and George Lopez.

After 16 long years of hustle and many struggles, Esparza's big break appeared through Last Comic Standing on NBC, which he ended up winning. This success led to the circle of his audience getting wider, making him perform at more live shows.

His very first stand‐up comedy special, They're Not Gonna Laugh at You, came about in 2012, which included the involvement of his wife, who also happened to be the producing partner.

Esparza has appeared in many TV shows: Superstore, The Eric Andre Show, and Gentefied. In addition, several campaigns have hired him to be their spokesperson, including a national Target Mobile campaign and a national Honda Fit campaign.

His second hour-long comedy special, Translate This, was produced by himself and his wife and was released in 2017. Esparza hosts a weekly podcast titled What's Up Fool? on the All Things Comedy Network, which features intriguing tales from various people.
