FTX Arena (formerly AmericanAirlines Arena)
Longtime Miami residents know that the city has often struggled with accommodating the population of Southern Florida when it comes to large entertainment spaces. It wasn’t until 1970 that the city opened its first arena, the Hollywood Sportatorium. Concrete, steel, and asphalt, it was a shell of a space, void of air conditioning and stocked with uncomfortable bench seating. In 1988, the Miami Arena opened. However, after a decade of use, it became a relic of the past, with a lack of updates, few amenities, and limited seating. To catch up with contemporary arenas and accommodate the large number of sports and events fans in the area, the AmericanAirlines Arena was built.
Opened on December 31, 1999, the AmericanAirlines Arena beckoned in a new century of entertainment options. The $213 million project was sponsored by many partners, including—of course—American Airlines. For this reason, architects, designed the famous aircraft painted atop the arena’s roof, visible to all those who take off and land at the nearby Miami International Airport. For concerts, the arena can hold around 20,000 people, depending on the configuration of the seats and stage. However, NBA followers and Miami Heat fans know that sports are at the core of this stadium; the typical game can accommodate 19,600 people.
With the new build came new amenities that can compete with other arenas around the country. AmericanAirline Arena’s Dine With Us program pulls together some of the best restaurants and culinary artisans in Miami, offering well-loved arena food as well as seasonal menus. In addition to premium dining, there are premium parking areas, premium bars, and premium lounges to enjoy.
Thinking about attending one of the many upcoming events at the Arena? Consider purchasing tickets to see Marc Anthony, Ariana Grande, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Eros Ramazzotti, Billie Eilish, Cher, Ana Gabriel, Prince Royce, Elton John, or Camila Cabello. For family-designed outings, look into shows such as Disney On Ice: Dream Big and Jurassic World. Plus, don’t forget the multitude of sports offerings in the Arena. The Miami Heat have opponents lining up from around North America, including the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers, Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers.
The AmericanAirlines Arena can be found at 601 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida, 33132. Find it between NE 8th street and NE 6th Street, south of Maurice A. Ferre Park and north of Bayfront Park and Amphitheatre.
