Ghost - The Musical
Ghost is a musical with a book by Bruce Joel Rubin and music and lyrics by Dave Stewart, Glen Ballard, and Bruce Joel Rubin.
The musical is based on a 1990 film, a romantic fantasy thriller of the same name. It premiered at the Manchester Opera House in March 2011 and West End in the summer of the same year. It was transferred to Broadway in 2012. The company went on a UK tour in 2013.
The Manchester and Broadway versions had Richard Fleeshman as Sam Wheat and Caissie Levy as Molly Jensen. The West End production got mixed reviews though the special effects were applauded.
The Manchester musical was directed by Matthew Warchus. The costumes and set were designed by Rob Howell. Ashley Wallen choreographed the musical, and Christopher Nightingale handled the arrangements. Paul Kieve was responsible for the illusions.
The Plot and Musical Numbers
Ghost is the story of a couple, Sam and Molly. The duo move into a loft apartment in Brooklyn and live together happily. One night they are attacked on the way back home, and Sam is murdered. However, his soul is trapped between this world and the other realm. He soon finds out that Molly is in danger and tries to get help from Oda Mae Browcann, a psychic (con artist), who can surprisingly hear him.
Sam gets help from an older ghost to move things in the physical realm using his mind. He gets to the root of the matter and plans with Oda Brown to expose Carl, the culprit responsible for Sam's death and financial fraud at work. Sam and Molly say goodbye one last time before his ghost moves on to the other world.
Though the musical didn’t become as famous as expected, it was still nominated for various awards. It won the Outstanding Set Design category at the Drama Desk Award in 2012 and the Outstanding Lighting Design category at the Outer Critics Circle. Most of the award nominations were for technical aspects.
The musical comprised two acts. The first act had ten musical numbers, while the second had eight. A few songs were replaced for the UK tour and Broadway version. Four original songs from the musical were released online in 2010.
Ghost the musical had Korean, Asian, German, Russian, Danish, French, and Japanese premieres over the years.
