Girls Night - The Musical
Girls Night is a musical comedy about the lives of five female friends in their 40s. As the title suggests, the musical shows the past and present of the main characters as they reminisce about various events in their lives, celebrate their successes, and think about the future. The musical has many hits from the 1980s and 90s to make the audience clap and sing along with the characters.
It is a jukebox musical on a small scale where audiences become a part of the show. It is conversational, lighthearted, and attracts the female audience. However, the musical isn’t a success. The content limits its engagement to one section of society. Audiences only those who can relate to the characters can enjoy the show more and feel connected to it. Despite the limitations, the show can make you laugh.
Plot Summary
Sharon is the narrator of the musical. She and her friends are meeting to celebrate her daughter Candy Rose’s engagement. Carol is Sharon’s best friend. Then there is Katie, Carol’s sister, Liza, and Anita, who gossip about the characters (about themselves in a way) to keep the viewers hooked. They all met at a karaoke bar, where music and drinks flow like rivers. The friends talk, sing, laugh, flirt, and that’s it. The musical doesn’t have much to go on except share snippets about the characters’ lives in bits and pieces.
Some would say the characters are stereotypical and don’t have much depth, but that’s the point of the musical. Carol is loud and successful, Anita is nerdy and a bit neurotic, Liza is bitter, and Katie is the kind that is sure to get drunk and go wild. It also has the ghost of Sharon’s dead mother hovering in the background.
The musical has Sex and the City vibes sans quality or content. The would-be bride, Candy Rose, doesn't arrive at the party, but that doesn't seem to be an issue. The party is just a ruse to get them together and drunk enough to make jokes and share secrets. The focus of the musical is on the lives of these women.
The songs are definitely the highlight of the musical. Girls Night has a range of musical numbers, from rock to pop to ballads. A couple of touching scenes made the musical a decent show.
