Hairspray

Hairspray is a musical based on a 1988 film by John Waters. It is set in 1962 in Baltimore and follows the life of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager. She wants to dance on The Corny Collins Show and achieves it. She becomes a social celebrity and campaigns for racial integration.

The musical first opened at the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle in 2002. It was then performed on Broadway the same year. It was nominated for thirteen categories at Tony Awards in 2003 and won eight. The Broadway version ran for 2642 performances before closing in 2009.

It has music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan.

It went on a UK tour multiple times and was adapted as a musical film in 2007. Hairspray debuted at the West End in 2008 and had a revival in 2021.

Synopsis and Characters

Tracy Turnblad is a plus-sized quirky teen with dreams of dancing on the famous The Corny Collins Show. She is put in detention with Black students at school. The students teach her a few cool moves, which help her win a spot on the show. This makes Tracy an overnight star. She uses her newfound celebrity status to campaign for racial integration on the show.

The show’s network producer Velma and her daughter Amber abuse and bully Tracy. Velma wants Amber to win the pageant and attain fame, while Amber is a bratty kid with no talent but will do anything to achieve her target. Hence, they make it hard for Tracy by creating several issues.

However, she gets support from Link, a teenage heartthrob, the show’s host Corny Collins, and Motormouth Maybelle, who hosts the ‘Negro Day’ on the show. Hairspray is about how Tracy fights all odds and overcomes hurdles to succeed in her mission. The musical is witty, positive, and charming in its approach to promoting progress and acceptance.

Marissa Jaret Winokur played the lead role in the original Broadway version. She won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical at the Tony Awards in 2003. Tracy's parents are kind and supportive and encourage her to follow her dreams.

The first act has eleven musical numbers, whereas the second has nine. The musical had several revisions before it opened on Broadway. Many songs were removed and replaced to create the perfect list for the final version.
