Hedwig et Le Pouce En Furie
Hedwig et Le Pouce En Furie, or Hedwig and the Angry Inch, is a rock musical about a genderqueer drag queen singer from East Germany. It follows the life of Hedwig Robinson in a fictional rock and roll band and has musical numbers from the 1970s. The musical had music and lyrics by Stephen Trask and a book by John Cameron Mitchell.
Hedwig et Le Pouce En Furie is the German adaptation of the musical with the same name. It first premiered on Off-Broadway in 1998, followed by an opening at the West End in 2000, and made its Broadway entry in 2014. It was also made into a film in 2001 with the same English title, which was directed by John Cameron Mitchell and won several awards at different events.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch won the Best Off-Broadway Musical category at the Outer Critics Circle and Obie Awards. It also won the Best Revival of a Musical category at the Tony Awards and three other categories for the Broadway version.
Themes and Performances
The musical explores queer identity and the challenges they faced in various fields. The musical is a place for queer performers to showcase their artistic skills and create a subculture (called queercore) in the industry. It has two characters- Hedwig and Yitzhak. Initially, Hedwig was the side character, while Yitzhak was the main character. As the writer developed the story, things began to change. Hedwig rose as the main character and presented a powerful queer voice to the audience.
It is an inspiring and heartbreaking musical with an emphatic theme and presentation. Hedwig is not a drag queen or transgender but results from a messed up sex change operation. It still helps her escape from Eastern Europe by marrying an American soldier. She interacts directly with the audience by telling her story in a monologue and songs. Yitzhak is the backup singer and husband, playing the secondary role in the musical.
Hedwig et Le Pouce En Furie was performed in several countries worldwide, from Austria to Israel to Turkey, Japan, South Korea, and many more. The musical has been produced and performed for a global audience over the years, receiving high praise from many critics, and continues to be one of the most famous rock musicals in the US and Germany.
