Hello, Dolly!

"Hello, Dolly!" is a musical that keeps returning to Broadway, community theaters, and high schools worldwide. In this lesson, we'll look at this unusually popular musical.

Howdy, Dolly! A Brief History

Hello, Dolly! is a 1964 musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart. Hello, Dolly! was the first song in the musical. The story is based on Thornton Wilder's 1955 play, The Matchmaker. Hello, Dolly! was first shown on Broadway in 1964.

Almost 3000 performances were given during its first run, which won a record 10 Tony Awards. It was brought back to life on the West End in 1965, three times on Broadway (including an all-black version in 1975), and turned into a movie in 1969.

What's up, Dolly? - The characters and the plot Synopsis

Let's talk about Dolly Levi, the main character (originally played by Carol Channing). She is a widow and tries to set people up. Horace Vandergelder, who owns a feed store with a net worth of $500,000, is the man she likes. Cornelius Hackl, Irene Molloy,  Barnaby Tucker, Ambrose Kemper, Minnie Fay, Ermengarde, and Ernestina Money are some people Dolly tries to set up with each other.

Like most musical theater stories, this one has a lot of mystery and drama. Dolly's job as a matchmaker and her desire to marry Horace is the story's central theme. Ultimately, everyone gets what they want. In the night courtroom, when Dolly gets in the way of everyone else's business, there's some drama and intrigue. This is a typical musical theater drama.

What's the point of this show? Who is this Dolly that we're greeting?

This Broadway show has been running for a long time and has been brought back many times. "Hello, Dolly!" is based on Thornton Wilder's book "The Matchmaker." It tells the story of Dolly Levi, a matchmaker, and self-described "professional-class meddler" in Yonkers, New York, who decides to set herself up with someone.

It opened in 1964 on Broadway, where it quickly won 10 Tony Awards. In 2017, a revival of the show won four more Tony Awards, including one for its star, Bette Midler. Dolly will be played by Betty Buckley, who won a Tony for her role as Grizabella in the original, "Cats."

What do you think? Any good?

The revival was a big hit on Broadway, and our theater critic says, "This "Dolly" is looking great" in San Francisco. "The production is great. The actors are funny, and the choreography is lively."
