Je'Caryous Johnson's New Jack City
New Jack City is a live play based on a 1991 film with the same title, produced and directed by the famous award-winning playwright Je'Caryous Johnson.
The cult classic movie is presented on the stage with style and the director's special dose of humor. The play's cast includes Allen Payne, Flex Alexander Treach, and Big Daddy Kane in the lead roles.
The play is set in Harlem, New York, and takes the audience through the journey of Nino Brown, a drug lord. It deals with themes like friendship, betrayal, love, and generational hardships faced by the characters. The New Jack City Live play uses the soundtracks from the movie to create the same atmosphere and feeling on the stage.
About Je’Caryous Johnson
Johnson grew up in an all-female household and saw his mother live through abusive relationships. He was termed an underachiever as a child but was determined to prove his worth and create a better life for his mother (and other women like her). He entered the theater industry in his teens, and two decades later, he is one of the US's most famous playwrights and directors. He won the NAACP 2007 Trailblazer Award four times and is the first person to employ an African-American romance novel as a play.
His production company, Je’Caryous Entertainment, performs and tours in different regions. It has twenty years of experience performing a range of concerts, comedies, plays, shows, etc., and is known for its diverse entertainment. In addition, the company specializes in customizing events to suit the audiences’ tastes and preferences.
Johnson also has other organizations like the I’m Ready Foundation and the Je’Caryous Johnson Acting School (JJAS) to nurture young talent and provide creative opportunities for kids. In addition, he conducts workshops by traveling across the US.
About New Jack City
New Jack City is set during the crack epidemic (the 1980s and 90s when drug abuse was at an all-time high). It deals with important topics from the period and is true to the setting. Carl Hart said the script was initially written for The Godfather: Part III.
The New Jack City Live play comes with a small tagline- 'same city, a new struggle,' hinting that the play could be a sort of sequel to the film or a retelling with significant changes to suit the current period.
