Early Life
Jeffrey Ross Lifschultz was born in Newark, New Jersey, on September 13, 1965. Jeff grew up in Newark but moved to Union when he was in the second grade. He moved again to Springfield, where he went to high school. Jeff grew up in a Jewish family with his younger sister. When he was 14, his mother died from leukemia. Five years later, his father also died.
Ross went to Boston University as a film major after graduating high school. During college, he worked at the university's radio station and also did audio engineering work for public radio. Ross got good at insult comedy when he was young. He calls it a "defense mechanism" that helped him deal with the rough neighborhood where he grew up.
Career
Ross started his career in 1994 by going to the Boston Comedy Club for open mic nights. Over the next few years, he started attending New York comedy clubs. During this time, he participated in one of his first roasts of actor Steven Seagal. He then participated in more roasts, which is how he first got the title "Roastmaster General."
Over the next few years, Comedy Central started airing some of these roasts for the first time. Some of his most famous insults caught people's attention outside of comedy, and Ross's career began to take off. He was hired by people like Billy Crystal and Jimmy Kimmel to write jokes.
In 2003, Comedy Central started making their roasts of celebrities, and Ross became a regular at these shows. He had made fun of Pamela Anderson, Charlie Sheen, Bob Saget, Alec Baldwin, Bruce Willis, and many others.
Ross still does stand-up comedy when he is not at a roast. He has played for people in prison and American soldiers overseas. In 2009, he also wrote a book. In 2016, Ross also started a show called "Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle." "Historical Roasts" by Ross was added to Netflix in 2019.
