La Boheme
Giacomo Puccini wrote La bohème, an opera with four acts, between 1893 and 1895. The Italian libretto was written by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, and it was based on Henri Murger Scènes de la vie de bohème (1851). The story takes place in Paris around 1830 and shows how a poor seamstress and her artist friends live the Bohemian (or "la bohème") way of life.
The Story
Henry Murger’s novel Scènes de la vie de Bohème serves as inspiration for the opera La bohème.
A poet, a musician, a painter, and a philosopher are all trying to make it as artists living together in Paris. On a cold Christmas Eve, their lives change forever. When a girl named Mim comes to their door asking for a candle, Rodolfo falls in love with her.
But the excitement of falling in love at first sight is soon replaced by something much darker. It becomes clear that Mim is very sick and that Rodolfo, who is poor, can't help her. Our bohemians try to find their way, but they soon get a rude wake-up call about how hard life is.
History of Performance
The first performance of La bohème ever was on February 1, 1896, at the Teatro Regio in Turin. A young man named Arturo Toscanini was in charge of the music. Evan Gorga played Rodolfo, and Cesira Ferrari played Mimi. However, Gorga couldn't handle the high tessitura, so the music had to be transposed down for him. The audience didn't react much at the first performance, and the reviews were all over the place. Even though the first reviews were mixed, the opera quickly became popular in Italy, and the following companies soon put on productions: The Teatro Comunale di Bologna, The Teatro di San Carlo, and The Teatro Costanzi.
La bohème was first performed outside of Italy on June 16, 1896, at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the beginning of 1897, the opera was put on in Alexandria, Lisbon, and Moscow. On April 22, 1897, the Carl Rosa Opera Company performed it for the first time in the United Kingdom at the Theatre Royal in Manchester. The performance was in English. On October 2, 1897, the opera was put on for the first time at the Royal Opera House in London. It was on October 14, 1897, that the opera was put on for the first time in the United States in Los Angeles.
