Madagascar - The Musical
After it opens in Sydney in December, Madagascar: The Musical will roar into Melbourne and Perth as part of an international tour. The play is a lot of fun.
It played to sold-out crowds in NZ and UK, and the musical is a critical and commercial success for DreamWorks Animation. Imaginative and vibrant sets, world-class puppetry, an exciting plot, and spectacular new songs will bring it to life and have audiences "moving it move it" in the aisles.
Plot & Characters
The zoo in New York's Central Park is home to Alex the lion, who is a major attraction. He is the king of the urban jungle. He and his best friends, Melman the giraffe, Marty the zebra, and Gloria the hip-hip hippo, have lived their whole lives in a zoo without a care in the world, surrounded by people who admire them.
Marty isn't happy just staying where he is, so he lets his curiosity get the best of him. With the help of some sneaky penguins, he makes a daring escape to see the world.
Alex, the lion, is definitely "The King of New York City" and the most popular animal at the Central Park Zoo. Marty is a zebra who wants to leave the Central Park Zoo and go out into the wild. Gloria, the hippopotamus, is a brave young woman with a motherly side that comes out when she's with her three best friends, Alex, Marty, and Melman.
Melman is a kind-hearted giraffe who tends to worry too much about getting sick. The Penguins are a group of birds who want to escape from the zoo and return to their home in Antarctica. Skipper is in charge of the group and gives orders with ease and authority. Kowalski is the second-in-command after Skipper. Rico is the strongest person in the group and can do a karate chop in anything he sees. The Private's main job in the group is to keep up the look of being cute and fuzzy.
The Zookeepers demonstrate everything there is to see and do at the Central Park Zoo. Zookeeper Zeke, Zookeeper Zelda, and Zookeeper Zoe are all significant roles for talented musicians and actors who can show how excited they are about animals and how much they care about them.
All of your favorite crack-a-lackin' friends make their way from the Central Park Zoo in New York City to the wild and unpredictable land of King Julien's Madagascar, just like in the movie!
