Plot Summary
The musical starts on Thanksgiving Day in New York City, where Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade looks even better than what it was the previous year. Doris Walker is the female lead of the story and a single mother with a six-year-old daughter Susan Walker.
Fred Gaily is a marine captain and an attorney who lives in the same building as the duo. We see that Susan Walker doesn't believe in Santa Claus and is not interested in Christmas.
Doris Walker is in charge of the parade and is worried that the Santa she hired has arrived yet. She then notices that the hired Santa is drunk, and Doris convinces a bearded gentleman she met earlier to take up the role for the time being. Fred and Susan enjoy the parade. Later in the evening, Doris and Susan are in their home and enjoy their time together, sharing about the day’s work.
New developments happen at Macy’s Store and in Doris’ life. She is torn between trying to keep her job and ensuring that her daughter doesn’t start believing in fantasies or have dreams of happily ever after. Kirk Kringle, the bearded gentleman, aka Santa, is the central point around which the story revolves. He is the real Santa, but when things go wrong, it’s up to Fred to prove that Mr. Kringle is indeed Santa.
Fred takes it up as his first case and eventually wins it. He and Doris realize their love for each other and decide to take a chance. The musical ends with Kirk Kringle watching Doris and Fred kiss inside Macy's Store. He winks at the audience and walks away, his job done for the year.
