Nutcracker! Magic of Christmas Ballet
NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet is a team of ballet dancers that tours the US and Canada every year to perform in the top twenty cities in the US and 140 cities across North America.
The ballet has become an American tradition and a part of Christmas celebrations. Former first lady Michelle Obama mentioned it in her memoir, Becoming, and talks about when her daughter, Sasha Obama, was a youth dancer on the team.
History of Nutcracker! Magic of Christmas Ballet
Alexander Godunov, Leonid, and Valentina Kozlov met producer Akiva Talmi, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, in 1979. Akiva Talmi has produced a few ballet shows with the trio.
He was also responsible for introducing Valentina Kozlov in the revival of On Your Toes (George Balanchine's production). He worked with Mary Giannone, and the duo started touring North America to perform ballet shows.
Nutcracker! Magic of Christmas Ballet was thus born when Talmi toured the annual International Glasnost Festivals and met the top ballet dancers worldwide.
Talmi met Stanislov Vlasov (Lilia Sabitova's partner) to create one of the first independent and international ballet touring companies.
The Story of Nutcracker Christmas Ballet
Nutcracker is a classic Christmas story performed in two acts. The touring company uses Alexandre Dumas Père's adaptation with music by Tchaikovsky.
The ballet was choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1891, a commissioned show by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the director of Moscow's Imperial Theatres, Russia.
The Nutcracker is one of the most famous ballets in the world. It has been popular since its first performance in the 1940s in the US.
It soon became a Christmas favorite among the American audience.
However, it took decades before the ballet was performed outside Russia after its creation in 1891. The first Nutcracker ballet show outside Russia was in England in 1934.
It was another decade before ballet entered the US. Even Balanchine's Nutcracker became successful only after it was performed in New York City.
Nutcracker is a coming-of-age story of a German girl and is set during Christmas. There are many versions of Nutcracker ballet and the Nutcracker! Magic of Christmas Ballet is one such popular version, along with the Balanchine version.
