Norma

"Norma," performed on December 26, 1831, is considered one of the best operas in the bel canto style.

Many people think it is Bellini's best dramatic work and has one of the most complex parts for a soprano. The way a soprano sings opera has often been used to describe her.

Written by Felice Romani, the opera was a hit and became one of Richard Wagner's favorite pieces. When the famous composer led the work in Riga, Latvia, in 1837, he added his aria for bass and men's chorus. This opera is, without a doubt, where Bellini's skills are at their best. In a time when romantic extravaganzas and so-called musical attractions are very exciting, he is a phenomenon that can't be overstated.

Story

Oroveso and the Druids pray for help to fight the Romans who have come to take over. Pollione, a Roman soldier, tells his friend Flavio that he is in love with Adalgisa. However, he is married to the Druid Priestess Norma, who he is not allowed to marry if Pollione leaves her.

Pollione meets Adalgisa and begs her to go to Rome with him. Though she says no at first, she gives in in the end.

Norma is upset because she doesn't know if Pollione will take her and the two children he gave her with him to Rome. Adalgisa says out loud that she likes a Roman. Norma scolds her, but Pollione walks in at that moment, and the two priestesses realize they are now in a love triangle.

Norma tries to kill her kids, but she can't. Adalgisa shows up and says she will give Pollione up. The two sing about how they have become friends again. Norma gets together with the other Druids and declares war. Pollione is then captured and brought to Norma. Pollione is alone when Norma comes up to him and tells him to give up Adalgisa. In telling the Druids to burn a priestess who has broken her vows, she is implying that the priestess in question has done so. She begs for the safety of her children, and then she and Pollione, who loves her again, are burned alive together.

History of performance

After rehearsals started on December 5, Pasta refused to sing "Casta diva," which is now one of the most well-known arias from the 1800s. She didn't like it because she thought it didn't fit her voice, but Bellini convinced her to keep trying for a week. After that, she got used to it and admitted her mistake.
