On Your Feet
On Your Feet! is a jukebox musical (Cuban fusion pop) with a book by Alexander Dinelaris Jr.
It is based on the lives and music created by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, the husband-wife duo who won a total of 26 Grammy Awards. The musical has some of the best tracks by Gloria Estefan. It also has an original number (I Never Got to Tell You) with lyrics by Gloria and music by her daughter Emily.
The musical had a pre-Broadway run at the Oriental Theater in Chicago in 2015 and opened on Broadway in November of the same year. It received nominations at the Tony, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
The Broadway premiere was at the Marquis Theater. Mitchell directed the musical while Trujillo was the choreographer. On Your Feet closed its Broadway performances in 2017. It was later presented in The Netherlands and Dutch in 2017 and 2018. The company also went on a nationwide US tour in 2018. The musical then opened at the West End in 2019. It was performed internationally in several countries like Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and Mexico.
More Information about the Musical
On Your Feet! is divided into two acts. The first act has twelve songs, and the second has eighteen. The musical initially had thirty-one performers when it was presented on Broadway. Ana Villafañe played Gloria Estefan and Josh Segarra was Emilio Estefan. Ektor Rivera, a Puerto Rican singer, took over as Emilio Estefan in 2016.
The musical starts with a dance number composed by Gloria. The first act has a young Gloria Fajardo growing up with her family in Little Havana, Miami. We see her meeting Emilio Estefan through her grandmother, joining a music band, becoming a singer, and falling in love with Emilio. We also see that Gloria's mother didn't want her to become a singer (partly because she couldn't achieve it herself).
The second act deals with how Gloria and Emilio become a success and hit the music charts. Life is crazy and busy for the couple, and during one such tour, the bus meets with an accident. Gloria and her mother reconcile. Gloria is determined to take control of her body after the surgery and get back on her feet, despite the doctors saying she may not be able to walk. The musical ends with Gloria making a return to the stage.
