The Plot, Musical Numbers, and Other Information
The musical is set in the French Antilles on the Caribbean Islands. It tells the story of Ti Moune, an orphan peasant girl. She is adopted by a loving family and has a happy life. However, she feels there's more in life for her and is destined for great things.
Things are set in motion when she comes across a handsome stranger, Daniel, hurt in a thunderstorm. She falls in love while nursing him back to health.
Ti Moune makes a deal with the Gods in exchange for saving the man's life. The story follows along the lines of The Little Mermaid, with the Gods playing an active role in the background.
Ti Moune's life ends with her death, though the Gods turn her into a tree on the island. The tree symbolizes a celebration of love and life as it grows bigger. It becomes a legend among the locals, and Ti Moune's story is passed from one generation to another. The musical ends with a little girl telling the story to distract her mind from a raging storm.
The Broadway version has twenty musical numbers. A few changes were made to other versions, though most of the songs are the same.
Once On This Island musical is being adapted into a Disney film.
