Every city serious about entertainment has a premiere arena, and Portland is no exception. Taking two years to build, the Moda Center – formerly the Rose Garden – opened doors in 1995. It has been a community staple ever since. This multi-purpose venue is able to accommodate hockey, basketball, concerts, speakers, comedy, family shows, and more. With a capacity of nearly 20,000 people, this venue is equipped to brings a variety of events to Portlanders, but sport seasons are a popular time for the venue. The resident teams are the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA and the Portland Winterhawks in the WHL. A number of other sporting events have been held here, too, including the 2005 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and the 2009 and 2016 men’s NCAA basketball tournaments.
When the arena is not catering to sporting events, it brings other talent and Moda Center concerts into Portland. Past musicians include Blake Shelton, David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Breaking Benjamin, Celine Dion, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Maroon 5, Megan Trainor, Tame Impala, Camila Cabello, Harry Styles, Jenny Lewis, and Justin Bieber. Various speaking events and conferences – such as TEDx, Al Gore, and Malala Yousafzai – have also taken stage at the Moda Center. Other highlights include comedy offerings and family-friendly shows. Although larger performances can fill up the 20,000-seat arena, some Moda Center events are held in the “Theater of the Clouds,” a special configuration within the arena, complete with curtains and a stage, designed for optimal acoustics and a more intimate feel for 3,000 to 6,500 guests.
Although the Moda Center is not the most beautiful structure in the city, the steel-and-concrete building has more to show on the inside. Built for $265 million and now worth nearly $500 million, it is loaded with the hallmarks of a competitive arena space. Skyboxes, suites, portable seats, and permanent seats create a flexible design for a multitude of event needs and spectator wants. Food options range from barbecue to banquets to sports bar fare. Outdoor terraces also line the upper floors, offering a cool indoor-outdoor feel seldom seen in arenas.
