Chicago Fire: Game Schedule, Tickets and more...
Chicago Fire Football Club is the Major League Soccer team representing Chicago, Illinois. The team is named after a destructive event in the city’s history, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which scorched over 3 square miles of the city, rendering over 100,000 homeless, killing 300 people. Chicago Fire FC was founded in 1997, over a century after the tragedy. It is a point of pride to recognize the hardships that were overcome in rebuilding. From the Chicago Cubs to the Chicago Bears, sports are a major component in Chicago’s culture and spirit. Chicago Fire is continuing that tradition...
In the past, Chicago Fire has had contracts with SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview and Cardinal Stadium in Naperville. Today, although they still use SeatGeek as a training base, the team is in Chicago’s city limits; their stomping ground is now Soldier Field. This football and soccer stadium in near downtown Chicago’s South Side. It opened long before the team was founded, back in 1924. Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) have held a World Cup match at Soldier Field, making it no stranger to the sport. However, it is primarily known as the oldest stadium in the NFL, so it is no surprise that the Chicago Bears have been regular residents, too. The 7-acre plot has been updated and modernized in recent years.
Interestingly, Chicago Fire is one of the only teams to compete in both the Western and Eastern Conferences. Prior to 2002, they were grouped into the Western Conference, but today, they are in the Eastern Conference, competing with teams in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, Quebec, Ontario, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. Although there are no clear-cut rivals for Chicago Fire, each fan has their own favorite matches. Many look forward to Chicago’s Midwestern neighbor in the Western Conference – Minnesota United – for future competition.
Despite the in-between placement of this team geographically, they have had a strong record on the field. Impressively, they have won the MLS Cup in 1998, the Supporters’ Shield in 2003, and the U.S. Open Cup in 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2006. Today, the team is guided by Swiss head coach Raphael Wicky, and the team is owned by Joe Mansueto, entrepreneur behind Morning Star. They are hoping to inspire new victories for the team, after a slump in recent years. For people who love to support an underdog team with a promising future, Chicago Fire FC is the way to go.
