FC Dallas Games

Dallas is known as one the cultural hubs of Texas, a place where arts, entertainment and leisure are widely celebrated. Sports are deeply loved, with teams like the Dallas Cowboys (National Football League), Dallas Mavericks (National Basketball Association), Dallas Texas Rangers (Major League Baseball) and Dallas Stars (National Hockey League) drawing national attention. In fact, the Bleach Report has called Dallas one of “The 25 Best Cities to Be a Sports Fan.” Soccer is another top sport that is pushing Dallas ahead of the sports curve. Founded in 1995, FC Dallas is the city’s professional soccer club, belonging to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the Western Conference. To learn more about the team, keep reading.

Nestled in Frisco, Texas – a suburb of the Dallas area – FC Dallas plays home games at the Toyota Stadium. It has been their home since 2005. Their first game drew in nearly 30,000 fans. In the team’s first decade, they played out of the Cotton Bowl, located in Dallas itself. The Toyota Stadium can hold more than 20,000 fans, and it was one of the first soccer-specific stadiums built in the United States, costing $80 million and taking around a year to build.

One of the things that makes the Toyota Stadium a special venue is that it is home to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Induction into it is widely considered the greatest honor an American soccer player can achieve. The origins of the National Soccer Hall of Fame go back to 1950, when the Philadelphia “Old-timers” Association, which was a group of former amateur and professional players, wanted to recognize soccer achievements in America. This was decades before the inception of MLS. A Hall of Fame museum opened in Oneonta, New York in the 90s. The private, nonprofit organization has evolved since then. It is an honor that FC Dallas celebrates the sport’s often overlooked history in the United States.

In 2005 when the new stadium was being built, the Dallas MLS team changed their name from Dallas Burn to FC Dallas. The original name was a reference to the burning oilfields in Texas. The change in branding, marketing and image may have been due to Texas being awarded a second MLS team in Houston. The Houston Dynamo was founded that same year. The Dallas supporter groups, including Dallas Beer Guardians and El Matador, stayed as loyal as ever during this revamp, and they continue to show enthusiasm for the team today. They enjoy the team’s rivalries, especially when FC Dallas wins El Capitan, which is a replica Civil War cannon that is awarded to the season’s top team in Texas. Other rivalries include Colorado Rapids; tension built during the 2005 and 2006 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Since the changes the team faced in 2005, FC Dallas has had a number of head coaches, including Steve Marrow, Marco Ferruzzi, Schellas Hyndman, Oscar Pareja and Luchi Gonzalez. With this leadership, FC Dallas has won a Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup. Follow the team to see if they can win the highly coveted MLS Cup this season.
