Hall and Oates
The ‘70s and ‘80s were a fascinating time for music, fueled by the expansion of newer genres, including new wave, synth-pop, jangle, post-punk, gothic rock, heavy metal, and alternative rock. Some iconic musicians soared to new heights in these decades, including George Michael, Duran Duran, The Cure, Madonna, Soft Cell, David Bow, The Beatles, Elton John, Depache Mode, Eurythmics, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Run-D.M.C., Queen, Kool & The Gang, and Michael Jackson. A number of hit musicians from those decades are making a comeback now, recording new albums and embarking on new tours. Among these reemerging artists are pop rock duo Hall & Oates.
Daryl Hall and John Oates met while attending Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Realizing they had similar tastes that favored soul, R&B, and pop. Both artists weaved in and out of overlapping local groups and dabbled in solo work. They even worked together in a soft rock band called Gulliver in the late ‘60s. In ’69, the duo reunited. Hall discovered his affinity for folk music, and the duo soon drew the attention of Atlantic Records. Daryl Hall typically performs lead vocals, and John Oates primarily takes on electric guitar and backing vocals. In their earlier years, the duo had few hits. However, after moving to RCA in ’75, songs like “Sara Smile” and “She’s Gone” became national tracks. “Rich Girl” released in ’77 became Hall & Oates’ first number one single. Although Hall & Oates continued to release new music through the end of the ‘70s, none reached the popularity as their mid-‘70s music.
By the end of the ‘80s, Hall & Oates had made major adjustments to their sound. They embraced characteristics of rock, merging it with Philly soul. Throughout their career, Hall & Oates have written most of their songs themselves; this remained true in the ‘80s, just with a modified musical style to support the lyrics. The Recording Industry Association of America found that Hall & Oates was the most successful rock duo in history, knock the Everly Brothers and the Righteous Brothers out of the top spots. Their most popular album of all time—Voices—cemented that position.
Hall & Oates have continued to make music and tour—both individually and as a group--since their reigning decade. In recent years, they have made appearances on shows including The Voice and American Idol, tapping into contemporary pop culture. Most of their duo’s tours take place in the United States, making their talent accessible for most listeners, but their tour schedule is still expanding. For the first time ever, they recently had their first round of concerts in Latin America, hitting Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. Right now, there is a clear resurgence and throwback bands in rock, from The Who to Styx to Hall & Oates. For more information on ticket prices and tour schedules, click here.
