Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde is a musical based on a 2001 novel and movie with the same title. It premiered at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco on 28th January 2007 before moving to Broadway in April of the same year.
The musical has a book by Heather Hach, with music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin.
Legally Blonde received ten Drama Desk and seven Tony Awards nominations, though it didn't win any. However, the West End production of Legally Blonde opened in 2010 and won three categories at the Laurence Olivier Awards.
The Broadway production had Jerry Mitchell as the director and choreographer, with Laura Bell Bundy playing the main role, Elle Woods. Sheridan Smith performed the lead role in the West End version (2009) of the musical.
History and Background Information
Legally Blonde is the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who joins Harvard Law School to win her ex-boyfriend. She helps other people with her newly gained knowledge of the law and defends Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial. It is a lighthearted story that also deals with important topics. The musical is divided into two acts and has numerous songs to keep the audience entertained from start to finish.
The Broadway version received mixed reviews, but the subsequent tours and productions were a financial success. The musical was filmed at three different events to create a final version of the musical to be broadcasted on MTV.
Legally Blonde happens to be the first musical at the West End to offer a ticket lottery. This practice wasn’t common in London, though it was followed on Broadway. The musical was a great success at the West End and continued until 2012. It has a total of 974 performances in London. Susan McFadden took over as Elle Woods in January 2011, followed by Carley Stenson in July of the same year.
The musical was also performed in Australia at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney in 2012. It went on to perform in Melbourne in 2013 and won the Helpmann Awards in five categories. The Australian version had Lucy Durack as Elle Woods.
Legally Blonde also had various international performances in countries like South Korea, the Netherlands, Japan, Malaysia, and China. It was translated into Hebrew for the Israel premiere in 2020. Ania Bukstein played Elle Woods in this version.
