CF Montreal Games

CF Montral (formerly Montreal Impact) – called Impact de Montréal in the French-speaking province – is a Canadian professional soccer team from Montreal, Quebec. They belong to the Eastern Conference in North America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) organization, and they were the third Canadian team to join MLS. Montreal Impact were part of MLS’s expansion, founded in 2010 and competing first in 2012. However, soccer enthusiasts may recognize the team’s name, because they replaced the North American Soccer League (NASL) team, Montreal Impact, which collapsed in 2011 after nine years.

Although the new, reimagined version of Montreal Impact only ranked 9th in the Eastern Conference in 2019, they have had some glimpses of success. They made it to the CONCACAF Champions League final and were named runners-up. Furthermore, against the other Canadian teams in the Canadian Championship, Montreal Impact has been victorious three times (2013, 2014, 2019). Unsurprisingly, the team’s most promoted rivalries are those within Canada, especially the other Canadian Eastern Conference team, Toronto FC. The professional sports teams, even in soccer, have been duking it out long before Montreal Impact was formed, which means the inherited rivalry runs deep. For such a new team, Montreal Impact are showing that they have the potential to stick around and perhaps move up the ranks – and not just in Canada – as they continue to train and compete.

It helps that they are managed by Thierry Henry, who is known as one of the best strikers ever. Among his accolades are making runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or. Beyond that, he has secured the award for PFA Players’ Player of the Year on two occasions, FWA Footballer of the Year on three occasions, and UEFA Team of the Year on five occasions. Although retired from the field, he has shown to be a promising manager.

To see Montreal Impact in action, soccer fans out to make the trek to Saputo Stadium – or Stade Saputo in the city’s French – which is where they play their home matches. It is located in Olympic Park in Montreal, Quebec, one of the most populated areas in Quebec and Canada more broadly. Longtime sports enthusiasts may know of Olympic Park from the 1976 Summer Olympics. Saputo Stadium is a recent add on, built in 2008. It was expanded once Montreal Impact made their way into MLS. The soccer-specific stadium now includes over 20,000 seats, a training field, and other add-ons.
