Oakland Athletics: Game Schedule, Tickets and more...
Oakland Athletics are one of the professional baseball teams located in southern California. The franchise belongs to MLB, competing in the West Division’s American League. Oakland Athletics – otherwise known as the A’s – are one of AL’s eight charter franchises. To learn more about their past as well as heir current place in MLB, keep reading...
Oakland Athletics is one of the few teams to have a history spread across the United States. It originally started in Philadelphia over a century ago, in 1901. They were called the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1955, the franchise made another move to Kansas City, again naming themselves after their new home, the Kansas City Athletics. In 1968, the franchise made its third and final move to Oakland, California. Between these three cities, the franchise has pulled in nine World Series Championships.
Because the Oakland Athletics franchise moved across the United States, they have had an evolution of rivalries. In the earlier days of MLB, a prominent rival of the A’s was the Philadelphia Phillies, who competed against the A’s in the City Series of the former National League (1903-1955). When the A’s moved to Kansas City, the rivalry faded away. More recent rivals include the San Francisco Giants. Their rivalry spurred in the Bay Bridge Series, the games played between the A’s and the Giants in the National League. This regional rivalry is strong but friendly, unlike some of the more aggressive relationships between other teams in MLB. Both teams are eager to snag the Bay Bridge trophy, something fans look forward to following.
To see Oakland Athletics in action, head to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Most people simply call it the Coliseum. Interestingly, the Coliseum was the last stadium in the United States to be shared by a professional football team and a professional baseball team. MLB and NFL/USFL shared the Coliseum on-and-off from 1968 until 2019. The Coliseum was also held by MLS for a brief period in 2008-2009. It is a truly multifunctional space that has been the focal point of Oakland sports for decades. Today, Oakland Athletics are the sole tenants, offering between 46,867 to 55,945 seats to baseball spectators, depending on the weather and setup. Although there have been ongoing discussions to build a baseball-exclusive venue in the area, for now, the Coliseum is the homebase of the A's.
