San Jose Earthquakes: Game Schedule, Tickets and more...
The San Jose Earthquakes are a professional Major League Soccer (MLS) team based in San Jose, California. They are one of three MLS teams in the Golden State, neighboring LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC. To learn more about this team, keep reading...
The San Jose Earthquakes are one of the original charter clubs in MLS. Like some of the other MLS teams around today, they are rooted in the North American Soccer League (NASL), which generated large soccer fanbases in various cities around the country. When NASL collapsed, MLS picked up in some of the places NASL had left off. The San Jose team was officially founded in 1994. When they first hit the field in 1996, they were part of the first game in the history of MLS, defeating D.C. United by a small margin, 1—0. Back then, the team was actually known as the San Jose Clash. Although they are known today as the San Jose Earthquakes, they have been nicknamed The Quakes and The Goonies.
When it comes to performance, the San Jose Earthquakes have a mixed record. The team have been competing long enough have both highs and lows in their history. Some of those highs include winning the MLS Cup twice (2001, 2003), the Supporters’ Shield twice (2005, 2012), and the MLS Fair Play Award once (2001, 2010). They have also been runners-up in a number of competitions, including the Supporters’ Shield (2002, 2003). Despite the team’s somewhat sparse list of accolades, individual players have landed high praise. Between various star players, members of the San Jose Earthquakes have brought home the MLS Golden boot, MLS Fair Play Award, MLS Newcomer of the Year Award, MLS Goal of the Year Award, MLS Comeback Player of the Year Award, MLA Goalkeeper of the Year Award, MLS Defender of the Year Award, and Landon Donovan MVP Award. Despite these high points, most seasons, they have not qualified for the MLS Playoffs or the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup/League. In fact, in recent years, the San Jose Earthquakes have placed low in their conference and MLS overall.
Despite the up-and-down record of the San Jose Earthquakes, soccer enthusiasts and team fans are eager to show their support in stadiums. The LA Galaxy versus San Jose Earthquakes rivalry is one of the oldest rivalries in American soccer, so it is closely followed by fans. The northern California versus southern California rivalry has seeped into many sports conflicts within the state, and due to close geographic proximity, supporters are able to follow their favored team to out-of-town matches. They also have a rivalry with the Seattle Sounders FC, with whom they compete for the Heritage Cup. To see the San Jose Earthquakes compete, purchase tickets to one of their home games at Earthquakes Stadium. Formerly Avaya Stadium, the remodel opened in 2015 and can seat around 18,000 fans.
