The Tenderloins
The Tenderloins are a group of New York-based comedians who have been performing together since 1999. Together, Joeseph “Joe” Gatto, James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn, and Salvatore “Sal” Vulcano strive to make audiences laugh with playful, awkward, embarrassing, uncomfortable humor. The comedy troupe gained exposure in 2011 when the truTV program Impractical Jokers aired. For more info into the cast of Impractical Jokers and what they are doing now, keep reading.
In the beginning, The Tenderloins were just a group of guys who loved improv. While Murr was working at the Staten Island Ferry, he ran into his friend Sal. They recalled their shared love of improvisation work. Soon, they connected with another friend Mike Boccio. For the next several months, they—alongside the current members and Gideon Horowitz—practiced together before debuting their troupe. Performing sketch comedy and improv comedy, they taped into a strange section of comedy, stuff that was funny because it was weird, strange, or uncomfortable.
The current four members—Joe, Murr, Q, and Sal—have taken their comedy to bigger and better audiences with their work on Impractical Jokers. In addition to creating the show, they produce and star on it. They think up startling, over-the-top premises and engage the public with hidden cameras. Their goal is to make the troupe member in the skit or improv break scene by laughing, stopping, or otherwise ruining the comedic scene. For example, a troupe member has massaged mayo onto someone’s feet during a foot massage, a troupe member has interviewed their childhood crush wearing only a speedo and body oil, a troupe member acted as an aggressive mashed-potato-serving waiter, and a troupe member has given an embarrassing wedding speech written by the other troupe members. Since the public has no idea they are being filmed, which ever troupe member is out performing is truly going out on a limb, humiliating themselves to make future viewers cackle, cringe, or both.
Although Impractical Jokers is still on air, the troupe has been involved in other television and movie projects. In 2019, they finished filming their first film called Impractical Jokers which is reportedly about when the friends met in high school, years before their hidden camera challenges became a thing. They also debuted a new show for TBS called The Misery Index. To top off the recorded entertainment, their internet-exclusive skits continue to circulate online.
For those who would like to see the wacky, abashing comedy of The Tenderloins, you may be surprised to learn that they still take time to tour. Their shows feature a mix of skits and improv, just like when the troupe started in 1999. In the last few years, they have performed for hundreds of thousands of people with shows such as Where’s Larry?, Santiago Sent Us, and Cranjis McBasketball.
