UFC - Ultimate Fighting Championship
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the world’s largest production company for mixed martial arts (MMA). This American organization headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada. Despite being founded in the 90s and undergoing difficult times in the early 2000s, it has grown into a multi billion dollar business with global reach.
MMA is a one-on-one combat sport where competitors strike and hold their opponents in order to achieve control. Under the domain of MMA are a variety of combat techniques that fighters can employ: kicks, punches, joint-locks, throws, chokes, and takedowns. The styles of these tactics are varied, because there truly is a mix of inspirations embedded in MMA. Fighters may train in anything from sumo to karate. However, three styles are associated with contemporary fights: amateur wrestling, submission wrestling, and kickboxing. Fighters aim to adapt their unique mi of styles in order to best face their opponents, often by targeting their opponent’s greatest weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
One of the greatest accomplishments of UFC is that it has made sports safer. Originally, MMA was barren of safety precautions. In some cases, opponents would fight to death. Fortunately, with the guidance and regulation or organizations like UFC, there are banned attacks to help protect fighters. Organs like the kidney, brain, and groin are largely barred from combat. Other examples of rules that both forbid and protect fighters are forbiddance of fish-hooking, biting, clawing, groin-attacking hair-pulling, and eye-gouging. There are also limitations on when fighters can and cannot attack their opponents. Attacking during breaks, or while in care of a referee, or after a round has ended, are all forbidden.
The UFC is also responsible for organizing a third set of standards: time limits and round structures. Included in this is the idea that MMA fights should be composed of three rounds, at five minutes per round, for all title fights. Championship fights are constrained to five rounds at five minutes per round. Along with these protocols are rules about how fighters should be judged and how many judges must evaluate matches. For instance, every match must be called by at least three judges, which cannot include the referee.
Another responsibility of the UFC is to create rules and regulations regarding fighter attire. Today, all fighting clothes—and possible sponsorships on them—must be approved by UFC. This uniform includes approved fight shorts and approved light gloves, stipulating that they must be within certain weight and padding parameters. Female contestants must also wear shirts, as approved by the UFC Commission. In the past, players could advantage themselves with boxing gloves, wrestling shoes, or other accessories to aid in combat. Current guidelines attempt to level the players by keeping uniform minimal and consistent.
If you are into combat sports such as wrestling or boxing, the events held by the UFC will be right up your ally. Unlike many other sports, the UFC encourages fighters from a variety of backgrounds to compete, showcasing the talent and vigor of athletes across sports.
