Proximity

Proximity opera is a trio of American operas termed one of the most heralded musical events. The opera deals with crucial challenges faced by our society and tackles them head-on. Issues like gun violence and its impact on the neighborhood, a yearning for a personal connection in our technological world, and the need to respect and protect our natural resources/ environment are the themes of Proximity.

The opera’s story presents a micro and macro view of society, individuals, and the community in the 21st century. The differences and similarities in people’s lives, the various societal intersections, etc., are presented through Proximity opera. What makes the opera so special is the teaming up of creative minds to develop the plot. A Pulitzer Prize winner, a winner of Grammy Awards, and the MacArthur Genius Grant winner are working together to create a compelling opera.

Proximity is presented by Lyric Opera of Chicago, a leading opera company in the US. Famous American soprano, Renée Fleming, is the curator of Proximity for its world premiere. She was nominated eighteen times for the Grammy Awards and won four times. She has also received the National Medal of Arts, along with several honors from different countries (France, Sweden, Germany, and England).

Four Portraits by Caroline Shaw, with libretto by Jocelyn Clarke and Shaw herself, is one of the three operas in Proximity. It has a song titled 'How Do I Find You?' originally commissioned by mezzo-soprano Sasha Cook. The Walkers is another opera composed by Daniel Bernard Roumain with a libretto by Anna Deavere Smith. 'Git Here,' 'We Shall Not Be Moved,' and 'In the cold ring of blood' are tracks from this opera.

Night is the third opera with John Luther Adams as the composer and libretto by John Haines. The excerpts from Proximity operas were performed at an outdoor concert by the Lyric Opera of Chicago as a teaser to generate interest in the audience. The event also had excerpts from other operas produced by the opera company.

Proximity opera will last for two hours and ten minutes with a single intermission. Carlos J Soto is the costume designer. Rena Butler is the choreographer, and Yuval Sharon is the director. Kazem Abdullah is the conductor of Proximity opera.
