Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical made up of popular rock songs from the 1980s, especially from glam metal bands. There are songs from well-known rock bands in the musical. It was directed by Kristin Hanggi, written by Chris D'Arienzo, and choreographed by Kelly Devine. Ethan Popp was in charge of the music and did the arrangements and orchestrations.
The actors often break the "fourth wall" during the show by talking directly to the audience. Despite the name of the musical being the same as a song by Def Leppard, that song is not in the musical.
After 2,328 performances, on January 18, 2015, the original Broadway play ended. Its run of 32 performances was tied for the 32nd longest in Broadway history. Since it opened on Broadway in 2009, there have been copies in Japan, Australia, and the UK, among other places. There have also been a few touring productions.
The Story
The big, bad 1980s are ending in Hollywood, and the party has been going strong. At one of the last iconic clubs on Sunset Strip, sex machine Stacee Jaxx plays while scantily clad groupies wait in line to realize their wildest wishes among a sea of lycra, lace, Aqua Net, and vodka.
In the middle of all the chaos, Drew wants to be the next big thing as a rock star. He cleans the toilets for a living. When German developers move in, they have plans to convert the Strip into yet another capitalist strip mall, and the rock 'n' roll fairy tale will soon end. To preserve the strip and themselves, Sherri, Drew, and the rest of the group must act quickly. The answer can only be found in the music of hit bands.
Productions
The musical's first performance was on July 27, 2005, in Los Angeles at a club called King King on Hollywood Boulevard. It was there for a short time. After that, in January 2006, it moved to Vanguard Hollywood for a second short run.
The show's success at the Vanguard led to a transfer to the larger Ren-Mar Studios, which also played to sold-out crowds. In May of 2006, there was a brief engagement at the Flamingo in Las Vegas.
Off-Broadway, at New World Stages, the musical opened on October 16, 2008, and ran until January 4, 2009. Ethan Popp was hired to oversee the music, and Kelly Devine was brought in as the new choreographer and made new arrangements and orchestrations for the show.
