School Of Rock - The Musical
School of Rock is a rock musical based on a 2003 movie with the same title. It has a book by Julian Fellowes, music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The musical debuted at the Gramercy Theater in Manhattan in 2015 and opened on Broadway in December of the same year. The production was performed at the West End in 2016.
The School of Rock movie was a comedy that dealt with the life of a rock singer and guitarist, Dewey Finn. He disguises himself as a substitute teacher at a prep school when he gets kicked out of his band. He is surprised by his students’ talents and decides to form a band to take part in the Battle of the Bands event. There’s also a love track between Dewey and Rosalie Mullins, the principal of the prep school.
Background and Other Information
Andrew Lloyd Webber revealed in 2013 that he had brought the stage rights to the film. Then in December 2014, there was a formal announcement about the musical. School of Rock was produced and performed less than a year after the announcement. The musical first premiered on Broadway instead of the West End due to the child labor laws in the UK.
Since the plot’s theme was also American, it was an easy decision to make.
The auditions for the Broadway version happened in January 2015. The selected kids, aged nine to fifteen, were included in the cast as students of the prep school. The Broadway version ran from 2015 to 2019.
The West End version opened earlier than the announced date as the production company didn't have to work hard to choose kids for the students' roles. This version ran from 2016 to 2020. A couple of musical numbers were changed in 2018. The original West End cast was replaced by a fresh batch the same year. David Fynn, who first played the lead role of Dewey Finn, got into the character for the closing show in 2020. School of Rock musicals also went on many tours in the US, UK, and Australia. It was performed in Argentina in June 2021.
A cast album with twenty tracks was recorded during the Broadway performance. It was released a few days earlier to the Broadway opening. Needless to say, the musical received a positive response from the critics and the audience.
