Singin' In The Rain
Singin' in the Rain is a musical that has been loved ever since it came out. The show opened in 1983 at London Palladium and ran for over two years. Since then, it has been put on Broadway and in many other places worldwide.
Adolph Green and Betty Comden wrote the story for Singin' in the Rain. Nacio Herb Brown composed the music, while Arthur Freed penned the words. The storyline is highly similar to the film released in 1952 under the same title. It takes place in Hollywood at the end of the silent film era.
The main characters are Lockwood's leading lady Lina Lamont, whose voice isn't sweet enough to be a star in a talking movie, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, romantic lead Don Lockwood, and his sidekick Cosmo Brown.
The Story
Singin' in the Rain "pours" joy, capturing the last days of silent movies before the new "talkies" took over. Since the premiere of The Jazz Singer is making Hollywood crazy, the studios have to change all the rules at once to make room for sound. When they do this, they leave behind silent movies and some of their stars. To stay in business, Monumental Studios makes The Dueling Cavalier into a musical film called The
Dancing Cavalier
However, Lina Lamont, the show's star, cannot sing or communicate well. Lina has voice-like fingernails scraping across a blackboard. Enter Kathy Selden, an aspiring actress whose sweet voice can cover Lina Lamont's. This invites questions like what it means to act, how credit is given, and what it means to get a fair shake in the movie business. Some of the best comedy routines, dance numbers, and love songs have been written for Singin' in the Rain. These include "Good Mornin'," "Make 'em Laugh," and, of course, the dance number "Singin' in the Rain."
Productions
The original West End production, which opened at the London Palladium on June 30, 1983, was directed by Tommy Steele and had choreography by Peter Gennaro. It ran there until September 1985. Steele played Don, Roy Castle was Cosmo, Danielle Carson was Kathy, and Lina and Julia were played by Sarah Payne in the first cast.
Comden, Roger Edens, Green, Dorothy Fields, George, Johnny Mercer, Richard Whiting, Jimmy McHugh, Ira Gershwin, and Cole Porter all wrote more songs that were added to the original film's vocal score.
