Something Rotten
Something Rotten! is a musical comedy. Something Rotten! Opened on Broadway on April 22, 2015, at the St. James Theater, where it ran 708 shows. There were 10 categories at stake for the Tony Awards, and it won one of them (Best Featured Actor in a Musical goes to Christian Borle.). Then came tours and international productions.
In 1595, the year when William Shakespeare is on the cusp of becoming a household figure, the story follows Nigel Bottom and his brother Nick as they try to make it as performers.
Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell wrote the book, and Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey wrote the music and lyrics.
The Story
Welcome to the Renaissance, where the Puritans have replaced the Black Plague, farthingales and codpieces are the newest fashions, and William Shakespeare is the most famous person in England. Nick and Nigel Bottom are trying to keep their acting company going while all of this is going on. Nick goes to a soothsayer in a last-ditch effort to out-Shakespeare Shakespeare.
The soothsayer tells him that the future theater comprises acting, singing, and dancing, sometimes all simultaneously. As the Bottom brothers try to write the world's first "musical," they fight Shakespeare over what the play's about. Something Rotten! is a funny, happy show that brings together all the things you love about Broadway.
