Sporting Kansas City Games
Sporting Kansas City – often called Sporting KC for short – is an MLS team based in none other than Kansas City, Kansas. They are one of the original 10 MLS teams, founded back in 1995. The team has had a few iterations that soccer fans may be familiar with, including Kansas City Wiz and the Wizards.
One of the interesting things about Sporting KC is that the team has always been an in-between entity in MLS. Perhaps this is partly because of the geographic location: Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri are just three miles apart. In fact, although Sporting KC’s stadium – Children’s Mercy Park – is in the state of Kansas, its administrative buildings are actually in Missouri. Missouri is also where the team played its first season. Sporting KC’s conference membership has also been up for question over the years. They started off in the Western Conference, then spent 10 seasons competing in the Eastern Conference. As of 2015, they have rejoined with the Western Conference again. They are the only major professional sports league to host their home games in the state of Kansas.
Despite Sporting KC’s struggle to root themselves, they seem to be settled in Kansas for now. Children’s Mercy Park, which has gone by a few different names, is a soccer-specific stadium that opened in 2011. The $200 million investment boasts that it is a “European style” stadium with a natural grass field and nearly 19,000 seats for soccer matches. Matches regularly sellout, and the season ticket wait list has climbed to 3,000 people before, a sign that soccer is a hot market in the area, pulling in fans from both sides of the border.
Although Sporting KC was not the team to watch out for in the early years of MLS, they have come a long way. Some of their accolades include the MLS Cup (2000, 2013), Supporters’ Shield (2000), U.S. Open Cup (2004, 2012, 2015, 2017) and MLS Fair Play Award (1998, 2002, 2005, 2006).
For a team that has been around since the start and has competed in both the Eastern and Western Conferences, Sporting KC has not accumulated many rivalries. However, they do have an intense standoff with Real Salt Lake, which began with a supposed brawl in 2011. The team also rivals Houston Dynamo. The rivalry formed after the teams faced off against one another in multiple US Open Cup matches. For those in the Kansas City area, professional sports competitions are not at an abundance. Give soccer a shot by seeing what the MLS and Sporting KC are up to in that nook of the Midwest.
