WNBA Basketball

The renowned North American league, WNBA or Women’s National Basketball Association, was commenced in 1997. Formed by the NBA (National Basketball Association) Board of Governors, WNBA unfolded as a women’s congenator to the NBA.

It was until 2002 that NBA held every WNBA franchise. Later the franchises were put up for sale to certain ownership associations in cities that didn’t have any NBA teams. The sale also enticed the groups in NBA cities that had no affiliation with those teams NBA.

What’s the WNBA logo?

From 1997 to 2012, the WNBA emblem represented an atypical shape of an inclined shield. While the incline symbolizes speed and movement, the shield denotes traditions. Interestingly, the logo also exhibits slanted letters, and the vibrant combination of colors reflects the American flag.

However, the Women’s National Basketball Association cropped up with a new identity emblem in 2013. Although the new logo even spotlighted a player in action like before, it had a difference.

  • Firstly, an oatmeal-and-orange color scheme replaced the blue-white-and-red color combination. The new color scheme represented the WNBA’s game balls pattern.
  • Secondly, the new WNBA logo featured a vertical rectangle shield.
  • Thirdly, the silhouette in the logo was now aimed at the basket instead of dribbling. It implied the players’ more athletic, competitive, and energetic spirit.

The WNBA logo received another logo upgrade in 2019, exhibiting a woman’s silhouette in orange. The league introduced it as the main logo. Next to it was a wordmark. This common acronym with broad sans-serif letters was entirely presented in orange.

Why is the WNBA Ball White and Orange?

Wilson introduced the WNBA league’s official game ball before heading into the historic 25th season to commemorate the collaboration with the league. The new ball exhibited an upgraded vibrant orange and white color scheme, symbolizing the new beginning of the WNBA and Wilson’s partnership and the game.

What’s the Difference Between NBA and WNBA?

Let’s first delineate both the abbreviations.

NBA is deciphered as the National Basketball League. On the other hand, WNBA stands for the Women’s National Basketball League.

Different genders represent these two popular leagues, and this big difference paves the way for other differences. Some of the differences are –

  • The minimum number of players in the male league is 12. However, the coach can add three more players as per their wish. Reversely, the maximum number of players registered at the women’s league is 12.
  • Male athletes can enlist their names at 19 years of age and with post-secondary experience. On the contrary, women athletes can be enlisted at 22 years of age and older.
  • Note that there is also a big difference in the salaries of both the leagues.
