CHL Hockey: Central

The CHL or Central Hockey League was established by Bill Levins and Ray Miron as a mid-level professional ice hockey league in North America. It operated from 1992 to 2014. However, the CHL was later sold to Global Entertainment Corporation, under which the league operated from 2003 to 2013.

After that, individual franchise owners purchased it. Out of the 30 National Hockey League teams, three affiliated with the CHL in the final season in 2014 – the Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild, and Dallas Stars.

However, after the death of Levins, the CHL’s championship trophy awarded to the league’s playoff winner was re-monikered the Levin’s Cup. But this trophy was renamed the Ray Miron President’s Cup after the retirement of Miron in 2000, and the league was sold. The last CHL playoffs were played in 2014.

The Most Memorable CHL Iterations

Over the years, CHL’s fans and enthusiasts have witnessed many iterations of this league. However, the most memorable one is ideally the 1963-84 version. It confronted several special teams germinating from the south, southwest, and Midwest. Interestingly, this league started its game journey initially as CPHL, or Central Professional Hockey League, with five teams.

In CHL’s three decades of existence, teams from 25 cities enlisted their names in the league. Nevertheless, CHL couldn’t have more than nine teams due to the teams’ inconsistency. However, the longest-running CHL teams include the Omaha Knights, Salt Lake Golden Eagles, and Dallas Black Hawks.
