ECHL Overview
The ECHL is a professional ice hockey league located in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, with 26 teams from all across the United States and Canada. Also, it was earlier known as the East Coast Hockey League is a lower-tier league than the American Hockey League (AHL).
The ECHL is an AHL developing league that delivers players to the NHL occasionally. Six hundred seventy-six players who began their careers with ECHL have been chosen to play in the NHL since the league's founding in 1988.
Kelly Cup
Teams from each level play for the Kelly Cup, which is given to the playoff winners each year. It is named after Patrick Kelly, who was the league's inaugural commissioner. Before 1997, the Riley cup was presented to the playoff champion in honor of Jack Riley, the AHL President.
The Kelly Cup follows the league's regular-season, which goes from October to April. In 2021, the Fort Wayne Komets were the champions.
