About KHL
The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) is a global event aimed at promoting hockey in Russia and other European and Asian countries. In February of 2008, a formal decision was taken to launch the league. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF) formally ceded the rights to organize the national championship to the KHL for three years on March 27th, 2008, following considerable preparations and discussions.
It is largely viewed as Europe’s and Asia's finest professional ice hockey league and the world's second-best league after the National Hockey League.
The KHL Championship also decides the Russian champion, which is presented to the top Russian team at the conclusion of the Championship's Second Stage.
Season Structure
The league has been grouped into East and West conferences since 2009. Each conference has 14 teams split into two divisions this season, each with seven teams. Each team plays 60 games during the regular season:
- Four games against each team in their division
- Two games against the rest of the teams in the same conference
- Competing event for each team in the opposite conference
- Eight extra games against selected opponents
Each conference's best eight teams earn a spot in the playoffs. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals are contested within each conference before the conference champions compete for the Gagarin Cup.
