About Astor Piazzolla
Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla is a musician, composer, arranger, and bandoneon player. He is famous for revolutionizing tango to create nuevo tango (a new style with classical music and jazz elements). He is considered the world's foremost composer of Tango music. Astor Piazzolla has performed at several venues over the years and would often play his own compositions to delight the audience.
He was born in 1921 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. His parents and grandparents were Italian immigrants. Astor Piazzolla's family moved to New York City and settled in Greenwich Village. Since his childhood Astor learned to deal with hate on immigrants and racism. He was exposed to jazz and classical music at home and got introduced to tango in 1932 when his family moved to Little Italy in Manhattan.
Astor joined the orchestra team of bandoneonist Aníbal Troilo in 1938 and stayed with him until 1946 when the tension between the two got too much for them. Astor formed and disbanded his orchestra team in 1950. Between 1950 and 1954, he composed several pieces to develop his style of tango music. Astor went to study in Paris in 1953-54 to focus on classical music. He was bored of tango by then. However, he returned to tango and created new compositions with his newly gained knowledge of classical music.
He went to Argentina in 1955 and formed a band, only to disband it and return to NYC. He even struggled to support his family with his musical career but proved himself in the next two decades and rose to fame.
Tango - The Musical: A Tribute to Astor Piazzolla presents his best tango music compositions and is a treat for the senses.
