The Band's Visit
In a time of dissent between many, the musical The Band’s Visit promotes togetherness between diverse peoples. In a monotonous, desert town in Israel, a local café owner pines for something exotic, different, distant. A band of Egyptian musicians arrive in the town, lost in their travels due to a border mix up. The foreign newcomers must stay the night in the unfamiliar place, but townsfolks welcome them in, leading to a night of intermingling and intertwining in the most unexpected ways.
Inspired by the 2007 Israeli comedy-drama film The Band’s Visit directed by Eran Kolirin, David Yazbek and Itamar Moses teamed up to deliver the story and its message using a different medium. Yazbek handled the music and lyrics, whereas Moses wrote the script and the book More transportive, charming, and enchanting, with a timely message for humanity, the musical transcended the ranks of theater quickly. It opened in 2016 off Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company. Less than a year later, it was brought to the historic Broadway-based Ethel Barrymore Theatre, which has been around since 1928.
Not long after the Broadway debut, the show started raking in some of the highest accolades and awards in all of theater. Among these honors are 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Direction, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Featured Actor, Best Lighting Design, Best Orchestrations, Outstanding Director of a Musical, Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Music, and Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical. Other awards include the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead, Drama League Award for Outstanding Production, Obie Award for Musical Theater, Obie Award for Direction, New York Drama Critics Circle Best Musical, Theater World Award, and several others. The Band’s Visit has quickly become one of the most award-winning shows in Broadway history.
Critics’ write-ups confirm the success, promising audiences a worthwhile performance. New York Magazine’s Sara Holdren wrote: “This show gave me hope, for what Broadway might welcome, might foster, might become, than any musical in a long time.” Ben Brantley of The New Work Times raved as well, that it is “Breaking news for Broadway: It is time to fall in love again! One of the most ravishing musicals you will ever be seduced by.”
Maybe the music’s success can be attributed to its message. Yazbek—head of music and lyrics—said that this story could be “about any two groups, even Democrats and Republicans.” For people who want some of the highest-quality performance art today, or those moved by the pressing themes it explores, this is a must-see musical.
