The Color Purple

Inspired by Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the iconic 1985 Steven Spielberg film adaptation), The Color Purple musical tells the narrative of Celie, a disadvantaged young woman whose transformation over the course of four decades provides the plot's dramatic arc.

The Color Purple is a story of hope with a joyful score of jazz, ragtime, African music, gospel, and blues. It's a testament to the power of love to heal and a celebration of life. It premiered on Broadway and at the Alliance Theater Company in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 1, 2005. Eleven Tony Award categories were opened to it in 2006, and it won nominations for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. In 2015, London's off-West End production moved to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

The Story

The Color Purple tells the story of Celie, an African-American girl in Georgia who is a teenager when her abusive stepfather gives her away to an even more abusive husband. Even though Celie works as a servant in her own home most of the time, she stays hopeful that she will eventually reunite with her children and her sister Nettie through her stepfather, Adam. Her husband has cut her off from the people she loves.

Celie's life worsens as time passes, but she finds ways to deal with it. A possible lover in the fabulous Shug Avery, her stepson's wife, a friend in Sofia, and a business making stretchy pants do very well. Through a series of bad things that keep happening to her, Celie learns that the most important thing is that she is a survivor and is still here no matter what.

Production

The Alliance Theater in Atlanta, Georgia, in the summer of 2004, first put on the Color Purple musical. Scott Sanders bought the rights to the work from Alice Walker in 1999 and created a creative team by holding auditions.

LaChanze played Celie in the Atlanta run, Felicia P. Fields played Sofia, Saycon Sengbloh played Nettie, Adriane Lenox played Shug, and Kingsley Leggs played Mister. Gary Griffin directed the work, and John Lee Beatty designed the set. Brian MacDevitt did the lighting, Paul Tazewell saw the costumes, and Jon Weston made the sound.
