The Light in the Piazza is a two-act musical set in Florence, Italy. Margaret Johnson, a Southern woman, takes her daughter Clara to Italy on a summer vacation. Clara meets Fabrizio, a young Italian man, and they fall in love. Their whirlwind romance is a cause of concern for Margaret as she is torn between her daughter’s happiness and a medical condition. Clara has developmental disabilities, which can potentially ruin her future with her lover. What happens when Fabrizio’s family gets to know about Clara’s medical secret?
The production team went on a US national tour in 2006-07. There was a Japanese production of the musical in December of the same year.
The musical debuted in Australia in 2008 at the Lyric Theater in Star City, Sydney. The Canadian premiere happened in 2009 at the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra in Alberta. The Light in the Piazza musical entered the UK the same year in May.
The musical was performed at several locations over the years. It continued to be produced in the US and Canada. The Broadway team reunited in 2016 at the original venue for a benefit concert.
